The 400 Blows

Outstanding film (Truffaut's first feature) of a boy's childhood in Paris, where he must deal with uncaring parents, mean teachers and reform schools. Much more than it sounds like from the description. This is a beautiful and affectionate film, autobiographical of Truffaut's own childhood. The 400 Blows is one of the seminal films of the French New Wave, incorporating the realism preferred by contemporary French critics--long shots that show all of the action rather than shortening time for us, a refusal to comment on or sentamentalize the characters, and an ambiguity epitomized by the final freeze frame on Antoine. He is where he wanted to be, but is it enough? I've seen this film many times, and I never tire of it.
