Blue Velvet

Visually inventive but difficult to watch and ultimately pointless mystery/psychosexual thriller. It seems like a perfectly normal day in Lumberton, a perfectly normal small town, until MacLachlan walks through a field and finds a severed ear. He is told to stay out of it by the police, but of course he doesn't, and begins to investigate on his own with the help of the daughter of one of the detectives. Before long, he is dragged into a strange, strange kidnapping/corruption/drug conspiracy. But it is obvious that Lynch doesn't care at all about the mystery, only about what cool shots he can make within its framework. Many of the shots have absolutely no follow-through; for example, everytime MacLachlan goes through Rossellini's apartment, the camera zooms in on the blowing curtains. Why? We are not told. After an intruiging start, the film swiftly turns ugly, brutal, painful, confusing, uneven, and...pointless.
