Laura Mulvey

A prominent film journalist, Mulvey made a permanent mark on film criticism with her article "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema," combining feminism and psychoanalytical criticism to suggest that in classical Hollywood cinema, the camera stands in for the male gaze, forcing all moviegoers, male or female, to experience film voyeuristically. Agree with her or not, her work has had a large impact on modern criticism.

Mulvey and her husband Peter Wollen, also a well-known film journalist, have co-directed several experimental films.

Currently, she is Professor of Film and Media Studies at Birbeck College, University of London.
