All Quiet on the Western Front A very poignant and realistic anti-war film, All Quiet on the Western Front leaves you quiet at the end at the sheer pointlessness of war. Lew Ayres plays a German youth at the outbreak of World War I who enthusiastically joins the Germany army, along with the rest of his classmates, only to discover at that fighting for one's homeland isn't all it's cracked up to be. The contrast between the older generation, used to the old-fashioned, more honourable wars, and the younger generation, faced with devastating trench-warfare in the first truly modern war, is very well defined. The final shot is quite famous, and extremely moving. The hand reaching out to grasp the butterfly is actually director Lewis Milestone's, rather than Ayres'. **** out of **** Cast From the novel by
