Amélie Endearing and engaging story of a young girl in Montmartre who dislikes her reality and makes up fantasties that she prefers. She sees pictures in clouds. A woman in a coma is just getting all her sleep at one time. It's more like Amelie lives in this world, but she makes up stories about the things she sees to make them more interesting. When she finds a box hidden in her apartment some 40 years previously, she makes a decision: She will find its owner, and if he is pleased, she will commit herself to doing similar things to make others happy. But will she be able to do the same for herself, when she falls in love from afar with a mysterious man? Audrey Tautou is a breath of fresh air, very much an Audrey Hepburn for our time. She is genuine, pixieish, cute as can be, and with an alternately innocent and wicked twinkle in her eye. It's nice to see a French film that is so purely entertaining and loveable. As you're watching, notice the color schemes, taken from French painters such as Matisse. If you're lucky enough to be watching on DVD, there's a nice little documentary that talks about the visual style, which is very inventive and pretty. ***1/2 out of **** Cast Year of Release: 2001 Page last updated 9/29/04. |
