American Beauty

The title refers to the American Beauty roses grown by Carolyn Burnham, a model suburban wife with a career in real estate. They represent what the Burnham family seems to be to the outside world--an upstanding, normal American family--healthy, beautiful and vibrant. But their appearance belies the reality. Carolyn is overenthusiastic and overbearing, her husband Lester is obsessive and in a dead-end job, their daughter Jane is rebellious and hates her parents. The rest of the neighborhood isn't great either. Yet the movie is. Somehow, though it is very difficult to watch and is almost guaranteed to offend someone, American Beauty manages to leave one with a sense of the beauty that remains in a fallen and depraved world.
