Batman

Batman is my favorite superhero. Honestly, I never read any of the superhero comic books, so I'm mostly familiar with Batman, Superman and Spiderman, through their movies and TV shows. Spiderman is amazing, what with the swinging on the webs and everything, and Superman is, well, super. But Batman is just cool. I mean, in Gotham City it's always night, he fades in and out of the shadows, and he has the Batmobile. And he does it all on his own! Clark Kent is from another planet and thus has superpowers. Peter Parker was bit by a radioactive (or genetically enhanced) spider and thus has superpowers. But Bruce Wayne is just a regular guy (admittedly, a very rich regular guy) who gets pissed off because his parents were killed and makes himself into a superhero.

Okay, this said, Tim Burton can also be an awesome director with the right material, and he makes Batman a dark, shadowy character whose intentions could easily be suspect. And it is precisely this moral ambiguity (at least at the beginning) that makes Batman stand out — and it isn't like Peter Parker's ambiguity that comes from his youth. Batman is clearly adult, knows what he's doing, and has to deal with an exceptional amount of bad publicity as well as save the city.

Michael Keaton makes a definitive Batman (rather to my surprise — I'm more used to him in over-the-top comic roles like Beetlejuice and the language-twisting constable in Much Ado About Nothing), and the two Batman films he did (this one and Batman Returns) are head and shoulders above the two later ones (Batman Forever with Val Kilmer and Batman & Robin with George Clooney). And Jack Nicholson nearly steals the show as the flamboyant Joker.
