The Birds

Psycho is more well-known than The Birds, but I submit that in spite of that, or perhaps because of that, The Birds is the scarier movie. For reasons that are unexplained, or perhaps no reason at all, birds are attacking people, even killing them. At first these attacks are random, only one bird at a time. But before long, the birds are working together, forcing everyone to stay inside and guard constantly against invasion. Attacks with no motive are scary, and intelligent behaviour from animals without a science fiction explanation is just downright disturbing. Eerily, there is no music on the soundtrack, only the screeching and cawing of the birds.

Hitchcock is at his best here, weaving a suspenseful and ambiguous tale that will leave you jumping at every tap at the window.
