Cinema Paradiso A boy in a small Italian town befriends the crusty old projectionist at the local movie theatre, the Cinema Paradiso. The years pass, and the boy takes over at the theatre when the projectionist retires. There's also a love interest for the boy in later years, but in the original theatrical version she leaves town, never to be heard of again, and the boy grows into a famous but jaded director, only remembering his former happiness when summoned to his hometown for his friend's funeral. A director's cut was released in theatres this summer with some thirty minutes added back in, expanding the love story and explaining what happened to Elena. This version is said to change the tone and theme of the film significantly, and should be available on DVD soon. *added later*: The director's cut is now available, and, as advertised, the added material greatly expands the Salvatore/Elena romance. But ultimately, it isn't necessary. Although it is interesting to know why Elena didn't meet Toto before he left for the army, and how they did finally meet again, it adds nothing to the enjoyment of the film, and actually adds nothing to their relationship. It is more detrimental to the movie than not, and I much prefer the original theatrical version. *end added* Overall, a very nostalgic and moving film, especially for anyone who loves movies and longs for the days of the neighborhood theatre — even those of us who don't actually remember it. ***1/2 out of **** Year of Release:
