It's a Wonderful Life

The most-watched Christmas movie that was never intended to be a Christmas movie. Frank Capra's pet project (he created Liberty Studios in order to make it) was a disappointment when it first came out (Liberty Studios went bankrupt after making it). No one was ready for dark Capra and suicidical Jimmy Stewart right after World War II. For this is a dark film, descending into one man's disappointment and despair at being stuck in a life he doesn't want. Excellent performances from Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, Donna Reed, and others. I really have nothing bad to say about this movie — most people remember it as being overly sentimental or schmaltzy, but it isn't. It may end happily, but Stewart has to go through the darkest place in his career to get there.
