Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

It's become the "in" thing to beat up on Episode I, but it's really not that bad. Okay, it's nowhere near as good as the trilogy, and it is a little slow. But it's a back-story episode. It's meant to set the groundwork for the rest of the story — where did Anakin come from? How did Senator Palpatine gain control of the Republic? Who is the mother of the Skywalker twins? Jake Lloyd is admittedly not great as the young Anakin (in fact, Lucas isn't great at directing actors in general, so many of the performances are not as good as one would hope), and Jar-Jar can get annoying if you let him get to you. But still, it is nice to know the beginning of the story. And the pod-race sequence is awesome, as is the final lightsaber fight with Darth Maul.

*** out of ****
